• Gas remains critical: Public perception of natural gas, and in particular liquefied natural gas (LNG), has shifted due to recent geopolitical events. It was a key theme in both 2022 and 2023 and continued in 2024. The U.S. LNG industry has significantly contributed to economic growth and job creation, especially in communities along the Gulf Coast. Moreover, it has become a pivotal player in global geopolitics by helping to compensate for Europe's reduced gas imports from Russia. In response, Europe has increased its LNG imports, requiring the expansion of existing terminals and the construction of new ones to manage the higher volumes. Energy security has consequently risen to the forefront of international priorities, with LNG emerging as a key element in the energy strategies of numerous countries. Discussions have surfaced regarding the U.S. potentially implementing a temporary halt on LNG exports to assess the effects on the supply and demand dynamics. Despite this, the industry remains robust, producing 14 million cubic feet per day, with 12 projects under construction in the U.S. and 22 more planned.
• Affordability is in sharper focus: The energy trilemma—balancing affordability, reliability, and sustainability—was a core discussion topic in 2023. In 2024, affordability became a more central concern, with government initiatives like the IRA in the U.S. aiming to support clean technology initiatives. Companies are saying this is a start, but not sustainable. There is also an issue that these government incentives face uncertainties around implementation that have paused project commitments, which, in turn, impact supply chain readiness.
• Existing assets are essential: Modernizing existing assets also emerged as a critical theme this year. While the development of new, cleaner technologies is vital, new projects take time to permit and build. This means there is also a pressing need to decarbonize current infrastructure. • Nuclear gains ground: Post-COP28, the need for nuclear energy has increased, signaling a positive shift in sentiment towards nuclear power and its potential role in a diversified energy mix. During CERAWeek's Nuclear Renaissance panel, participants stressed the importance of scaling up nuclear production through improved financing, project management, and a manufacturing mindset. The panel highlighted the necessity of a clean energy supply chain, government support, innovative reactor designs, and long-term contracts for fuel supply and customer orders. Addressing workforce challenges, they emphasized the importance of education, training, and restarting nuclear engineering programs to build a skilled talent pool. The panelists expressed optimism for nuclear energy's role in the clean energy transition and called for public education and investment to realize its potential.
• Permitting pains continue: Streamlining permitting processes is a requirement to advancing the energy transition, with a clear call for more standardized and efficient approval procedures. The current system, described as overly lengthy and burdensome, often results in significant project delays, with cases taking over 10 years for approval. This has brought to light the pressing need for permitting reform to expedite the development of critical minerals and other strategic resources. Senator Sullivan, Governor of Alaska, further underscored this point, emphasizing the intersection of energy policy, national security, and economic development. His insights stressed the importance of strategic policy decisions and reforms to maintain and enhance the United States' position on the world stage, thereby ensuring a more streamlined, effective approach to resource development that aligns with the nation's energy and security goals.
• The energy transition can’t be done alone. As energy and electricity demand is growing, the journey to decarbonization by 2050 is complex and requires leveraging all available technologies while remaining open to future innovations. The importance of partnerships and international collaboration to deploy new technologies and advocate for consistent standards and regulations was mentioned in multiple sessions. While technologies like hydrogen are already on the table, they require further refinement to scale up. It's estimated that around one-third of the technology needed to achieve our decarbonization ambitions hasn't even been invented yet.
