Leading by example

When choosing electives as a high school sophomore, Nicole Smith wasn’t interested in cooking or art classes. Instead, remembering the joy she experienced growing up in her grandfather’s carpentry workshop, she chose engineering. Then, her mother enrolled her in a week-long Women in Technology program at Purdue University and she was hooked.

Nicole went on to secure a degree in mechanical engineering technology from Purdue, becoming the first in her family to graduate from college. While studying abroad in Germany, she learned about Siemens Energy in a class lecture. Impressed by the company, she applied for an opening at our Winston-Salem Service Center. She received the offer just as she was walking across the graduation stage.

That was five years ago. Today Nicole has progressed from her entry role as a manufacturing engineer for rotating components to quality supervisor for repairs. Her job entails helping with production and making sure her team of 19 has the necessary tools to complete their work. She also oversees the metallurgical lab, ensuring tests flow through in a timely manner.

While she loves technology, Nicole’s favorite part of Siemens Energy is the people she works with.

“This location is a diverse and dynamic working environment, with many of us hailing from different cultures and backgrounds. Some of our team members joined us when other sites closed, adding to the rich mix of experiences here," shares Nicole. “In this fast-paced setting, our team plays a crucial role. We’re the first and last to touch the parts, and we take pride in ensuring customer satisfaction. That gives me a genuine sense of fulfillment every day.”

Beyond work, Nicole enjoys outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking, as well as cooking and reading. She recommends "The Great Alone" by Kristin Hannah, a heartwarming adventure that reminds us of the significance of family beyond blood relations.

She recently expanded her own family in September by marrying her husband, Jordan. Their home is shared with their cat, Marshall, a rottweiler mix named Hank, and Peggy, a Chihuahua puppy.

Looking ahead, Nicole has plans to pursue a master’s degree in business management. However, she draws inspiration from her blue-collar parents, firmly believing that true success comes from learning through the wisdom and experiences of seasoned colleagues.

Not many people would imagine an engineer as a high school cheerleader. But the lessons Nicole learned from 12 years of cheering have shaped her solid work ethic.

“Cheerleading taught me the importance of both individual and team effort,” she explains. “On a cheer squad, you focus on building your individual strength and flexibility, then you all come together as a team to pull off those stunts successfully. The same approach applies on a work team.”
