As the world continues to move forward with ambitious decarbonization targets, the European Union has set goals to cut CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. One way to get there is by blending green hydrogen with natural gas as fuel for power generation. But there is currently no large-scale commercial production of electricity using hydrogen. The Wien Energie Donaustadt power plant, in the city of Vienna, is leading the way by providing the world's first proof of concept for hydrogen co-firing in Siemens Energy large gas turbines in combined cycle application. Thanks to a partnership between several key players, large-scale power production from green hydrogen can now become a reality.

Hydrogen Expert at Donaustadt Power Plant | Wien Energie

As a hydrogen expert at the Donaustadt power plant in Vienna, Austria, Michael Kotschan is responsible for the plant’s flagship project to test hydrogen co-firing on its SGT5-4000F gas turbine. He is deeply interested in various green technologies, especially waste incineration, biomass combined heat production and geothermal energy.

Michael has a Ph.D. in Process Engineering from the University of Leoben in Austria.

Service Head Austria | Siemens Energy

Ales is Head of Generation Service in Austria and is responsible for the development and implementation of diverse service activities, including hydrogen based solutions. In his 20 years in the power industry, he has worked in gas, coal and nuclear power generation as well as in power distribution.

Ales holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University in Vienna, Austria.

Thomas is Field Sales Head in the Eastern Europe region and is responsible for service sales for large rotating equipment within Generation Service. In his 15 years in sales, his focus has been on Long Term Programs, Modernizations, Upgrades and Decarbonization topics in Europe, Russia and Asia. Thomas is passionate in developing and implementing new products and service concepts together with our partners.

Thomas holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg, Germany
